Decisions

Decision: [dəˈsiZH(ə)n] (noun)- a solution or resolution reached after consideration

Successful people make decisions quickly and change their minds slowly.  And it isn’t about being impulsive and having a fixed mindset that is unwilling to course correct.  It’s about belief.

A decision begins the process of making a commitment to yourself to make something happen.  There are two major themes that occur with decision making that keep people buffering, out of their power, and not moving forward.

  1. You don’t make decisions, and instead vow to ‘think about it’.
  2. You make a decision, then make a different decision, then make a different decision, and then a different decision and never see any decision through to completion because at any moment and magical whim (most often when you ‘don’t feel like it’) you can make a different decision.

The truth is, when you set a decision aside to think about it you tank your energy in one of two ways:  you obsess about it and can’t think of anything else or you forget about it and leave the energetic thread open making no decision at all (just like having programs open on your computer that you’re not using… they take bandwidth and slow the machine down).

What actually happens when you put off making a decision is that the decision gets harder to make!  It gets harder because your brain forgets details.  It only remembers about 20% of a 20-minute presentation unless you’re taking notes.  You’re forgetting the important information the longer you wait to make a decision.  You brain is also programmed to give you all the reasons why you can’t do something.  In fact, 80% of your automatic thoughts focus on why things can’t or won’t work.

The longer you wait to make a decision the more you’ll be telling yourself you won’t be successful!  Not helpful.

And here’s the thing.  Nothing changes when nothing changes!  There simply must be a decision to get the train rolling down the tracks unless you want to live in sames-ville for the rest of your life.

There are two criteria which set you up to make power decisions, decisions that align you to create your potential rather than to continue doing more of the same by focusing on what’s possible:  being certain and feeling courageous about it.

And this is where thinking and feeling on purpose comes in really handy with decision making.  It’s easy to be certain and feel good about small decisions such as what you’ll have for lunch or how you’ll spend your weekend.

But big decisions come with uncertainty because of course 80% of your thoughts are telling you why you can’t do the thing, and your feelings will reflect this as fear, shame, overwhelm, and other intensely unsavory emotions.

When you understand these thoughts and feelings are part of the decision-making process, you can make clear, powerful decisions by being equipped with tools that allow you to think and feel on purpose.  You get really clear on what you’re going to have to do to get where you want to be, and decide what, where, and how to build the dream.

Remember how I mentioned at the beginning of this blog successful people make decisions quickly and change their mind slowly?  The reason is because they believe so deeply in their ability to make what they choose work for them, there’s no reason to delay the decisions, sweat the small stuff, change their mind like they’re aiming at a moving target.  Successful people lead the way, chart the path, and are assured in their ability to learn what they need along the way to succeed no matter what!

Put it to Practice
  1. What decisions have you been putting off?  Write them down.  Choose one decision at a time.  If you feel overwhelm, fear, anxiousness, etc, use this tool.  Then come back to the decision and drop your awareness into your body.  Does your body feel lighter, expansive, excited?  If so, that’s your yes!  Does your body feel heavy, shrinks, pulls away?  That’s your no.  No need for overthinking, your body knows the way meant for you!
  2. Notice the next time you don’t want to make a decision.  If it’s a habit it will happen sooner than later.  Use the steps from above, make the decision, and move on along.  The more you embrace this process, the more quickly and easily you’ll be able to move out of indecisiveness and into the empowerment you were always meant to embody!

Peace & Love,

Janessa

  1. Great thoughts! It can be tough to just ‘pull the trigger’. Most of the time a decision isn’t for life! Thanks!
